STILL FINDING MY FOOTING

First off let me start by saying, I am extremely grateful to anyone who has opened the link to this blog, took the time to read it or just browsed through the few pictures. Writing this blog is something that I have wanted to do for some time but, did not feel confident enough to share my opinions. Now that I've started I can say without a doubt it has become one of the most satisfying experiences, though it has reached more of my friends and family then actual readers, my hope is that it will continue to grow into something that people want to visit daily!

I have decided to take the next couple of weeks to really find my footing when it comes to blogging. I want every sentence to feel unique and be something that would only be said by me :). Put into the simplest terms I want to have a voice on my blog, unique to me my personality, likes/dislikes, and experiences. My goal for the New Year is that this blog will be updated daily Monday-Friday, with interesting posts based on beauty, fashion, life, and the rabbit hole( adventure). These posts will begin on Monday, January 7th! I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you and I hope everyone has had a beautiful Christmas.
Wishing you a Happy New Year!!!

SEEING RED!

So this is a review of ELF's Mineral Lipstick, which retails for $3.00.I know people are probably thinking Kesha girl why you complaining about some three dollar lipstick, I mean what do you expect for $3.00. But although ELF is more on the cheaper side of cosmetic brands I really did think this product was going to be decent and deliver what it promises. I used the colour "rich red" and let me tell you there was nothing rich about it! The product promises that the vitamin A,E, and C ingredients would moisturize lips and that is completely false. Rich Red went on smooth but within minutes I could feel the product drying my lips, I know that lipsticks are often on the dryer side so I tried to save this lip product, but not even my Maybelline, "Cherry Me" lip balm could save it. Now i wouldn't rule out any other products from ELF because I have tried some that I really love, but on this product I have to say, keep your $3.00! I hope this review is helpful, and if you've used this product and love it PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT!.

P.S. -for those of you not brave enough to wear a red lip colour during this holiday season, Cherry Me is a great lip balm that adds a little bit of colour to your lips while keeping them moisturized.

WHY I WANT TO BLOG

So I've never quite felt like i fit in. Its like that pair of jeans you have that you desperately want to fit into. You go through the routine of pulling them on, zipping them up and trying to get the end with the button through the end with the hole, but no matter how hard you try those jeans just don't fit! Don't get me wrong I have some of the most amazing friends you will ever meet but, on the inside I just never felt like I fit in. But for the most part I did not care, that those jeans did not fit because I had a secret weapon, my Grandma. Unfortunately after struggling with kidney disease for 32 years my grandmother passed away. I. thought I was fine,I went through the whole summer without her, I worked a summer job, hung out with friends, and returned to University in the fall.Once in University I realized I was missing something, I missed that person that understood me, the person who would reassure me that not having light skin didn't mean i wasn't beautiful in my own way, or the crazy ways I dressed was okay and just another part of who I was, and last but not least the person who's unwavering positivity made me feel like it was okay to be unique! I left school in December and didn't go back because I needed to find a way to get back to being me and appreciating everything about me that made me unique. I have to thank my cousin Tasha for first suggesting that I should watch youtube videos by BeautyByJJ, who then led me to discover BritpopPrincess, and ShirleybEniang. Finally there were girls who looked like me, that were giving advice about beauty tips! And what was inspiring to me was that they were so confident in what they were doing and the advice that they were giving. Needless to say after this I became a YouTube lover and discovered other Beauty Gurus like ThePersianbabeBeautycrush, and SoTotallyvlog, who in my opinion have the most amazing style sense, which is so unique and well put together. What these gurus all have in common is that they're all positive, unique, and creative people, whose blogs/videos I looked forward to on my saddest days during last winter when I was not in school. They've each chosen to share their story with us, whether it be through video, image, or blog. Most importantly they've each taught me that it is okay to be unique and have your own individual sense of self in this crazy world. For that I am forever grateful and I hope that sharing my story whether it be through video, image, or blog, that I can inspire someone else who feels like they don't quite fit in.

A WET N' WILD SPOILED BRAT & SUGAR PLUM FAIRY

I've definitely been feeling more festive these days, though I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that we are officially ten days away from Christmas. I am not so much excited about the gift aspect of the holidays this year but, the fact that I get to spend time with the fam jam! My makeup has been definitely reflecting the Christmas spirit(well, at least I think so!), even in the names of the products I've been wearing. So here's a picture of a makeup look I wore featuring Wet n' Wilds Spoiled Brat Eyeshadow and their Lipstick in #908C Sugar Plum Fairy.

To get this look I started off using the Wet N' Wild Eye Shadow Trio in "Spoiled Brat". I think the Wet N' Wild Trio palettes are perfect if your new to makeup or just trying to experiment because it has a specific colour for your eyelid, crease and brow bone. The palette also comes with instructions at the back showing you how to apply the colours, and two little applicator brushes. I thought this palette would be perfect for a holiday look.

Step 1. I used the cranberry colours all over my lid.
Step 2. I smoked it out on the outer lid with the black colour in the palette, which has flecks of silver glitter.

For my Lips I used Wet N' Wild Sugar Plum Fairy which I applied after applying Maybelline's Baby Lips "Cherry Me" Lip Balm.

The eyeshadow definitely isn't as pigmented as it appears in the package but, It does last all day. As for the lipstick I'm actually quite fond of it, especially the stain it leaves on your lips throughout the day. I don't know if its just me but I actually like how lipstick looks as it wears off.
I found these products to be very festive!

I CAN'T BELIEVE ITS NOT BUTTER-REVLON LIP BUTTER

So when I think of butter I think of creamy salty deliciousness that you spread on toast and some pretty slamming butter milk pancakes. So when Revlon came out with a lip butter I was really skeptical, cause I mean what is a lip butter?

So this is a Revlon Lip Butter I purchased it in #001 Pink Truffle. I purchased this colour because I thought it would be  the perfect nude for my skin tone.At first sight the Lip Butter looked exactly like a lipstick which was definitely a put off for me because If I wanted a Lipstick I would have boughten a Lipstick. After applying the product I found that this is most definitely not a Lipstick. It goes on very sheer and moisturizes the lips very well. But most importantly for me it does not create that gross line that most lip products create when they go on your lips. Because this product does go on sheer I definitely recommend building it onto your lips. When I tried it the first time I did not like it but, trying it a second time and building it on made me absolutely love this product. Though this product can't revive dry toast it can moisten lips and add colour.

Maybe She's Born With, Maybe its Maybelline

When you think about makeup in 2012, you should most definitely consider this year to be the come back of the drugstore brands. This year drugstore brands have in my opinion, rivalled some of the best name brand cosmetic companies, and in some cases even surpassed them in the quality of their products. Many drugstore brands proved this year that they can be just as good, if not better then higher end companies and one of the shining brands for me this year was Maybelline. From the baby lips, lip balm which offers moisture as well as a little colour to the innovative Mega Plush Gel Mousse Mascara this year Maybelline has shown to be an exceptional cosmetic brand. Although if i had to choose one specific thing to focus on I would definitely say that Maybelline wins the Mascara award for me every time.

The first Maybelline Mascara that I must talk about is Volum' Express the Mega Plush. This Mascara partly appeals to the lazy person in me who doesn't feel like taking her mascara off after a long day. This Mascara is their first gel mousse mascara formula and it promises that lashes will not be brittle or flakey after it is applied. I was skeptical at first because, come one lets face it most mascaras leave your eyelashes flakey and brittle, but I seemed to have found the exception. After falling asleep  with this Mascara on I woke up to find that my eyelashes were soft and not brittle or flakey like I expected them to be.They held their voluminous shape over night and after rubbing the lashes between my fingers they did not n anyway appear to be flakey. I highly recommend this mascara especially, because they deliver on every promise that they make. Most importantly if your feeling lazy after a night out this mascara won't leave the normal flakey mess.

Great Lash Lots of Lashes is the second Maybelline mascara that i am absolutely in love with. This product has been around for a while, and  the version with the regular brush was really popular with many girls in my high school. When I originally bought this product I thought that the brush would be perfect for my bottom lashes and completely thought that it would not be beneficial to my top lashes. I was wrong! I have to say that this is by far the best mascara I have ever tried, it lengthens my lashes and makes them appear fuller. I am most definitely obsessed with this mascara and the quality is amazing, I would really have to be swayed to try something new.
Maybeline has by far proven to me this year that they make some amazing mascaras. If you love your lashes as much as I do you can also try Maybellines:

CHRISTMAS WREATH DIY

So guess what guys!! I DIY'd. This was my first attempt at doing a DIY project that I had found on pinterest, and though I did burn myself with the glue gun I managed to turn a plain old wire hanger and some extra christmas decorations into something beautiful. I went from this...

To This...

Tools
  • Wire Hanger
  • Christmas Ball Ornaments
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors( If you need to cute ribbon)
  • Glue Gun( To addd Decorations to Ribbon)

Step One: Unwind a wire hanger.
Step Two: Shape it into a circle the best you can.
Step Three: Slide ornaments onto the hanger using the whole which is usually used for ornament hooks.
Step Four: Once you've added your ornaments twist the hanger ends back together, leaving enough room to allow the hanger to be hung on a door. (for me this involved a lot of trial and error)
OPTIONAL-Wrap a piece of ribbon around the neck of the hanger
Step Five: Decorate the hanger with a bow using any ribbon you may have. This step also helps to cover the twists in the hanger. I used a glue gun to stick the bow onto the hanger and then added a smaller bow at the front.
OPTIONAL-You can also use a glue gun to join the bulbs together so they can stay in place. I didn't find this step necessary, as the bulbs stayed in place without it.

YOUR DONE!

DRUGSTORE FOUNDATION

The first time my mom told me I could wear makeup I was ecstatic! I had stood in the background and watched for years as my mom and her friendS got ready for their nights out. Finally I thought, I would get to experiment with different eye shadows and lip colours and I could get glammed up and look like my mom and her friends. Before I had a chance to go crazy with eye and lip colours my mom stressed the importance of a good foundation as the start to any face makeup. Because it was my first time wearing makeup we decided that a drugstore foundation would be best and we went to the local Shoppers Drug Mart in order to select a colour. When we arrived at shoppers my excitement faded as I looked over each available drug store makeup brand and realized that there were very few options available for someone of my skin colour. Realizing I was defeated, my mom opted to take me to MAC, where I was color matched and she purchased my first ever foundation!!! Going to Shopper’s Drug Mart today I realized that nothing has really changed and that there are still very few options for women of color. I don’t know if it’s just me or do others feel like sometimes the options available for women of colour are very limited? The world is increasingly becoming more multicultural and intermixed it would be nice for drug store makeup brands to start recognizing this fact when it comes to foundation.

OH CANADA! WHAT WE REALLY PAY FOR

Oh Canadians! Have you ever wondered why products in the United States are much more cheaper then the prices they are offered for in Canada? Well look no further the answer is here.
After purchasing a few products at Canada's Shopper's Drug Mart I decided to see how much the products would cost in the USA. I found the cost of the first product at Target in the USA, and the remaining two at Rite-Aid. After comparison I found that Canadians are paying $3.00 more per product(products listed in this blog) before taxes. Enraged that we are paying much more then our cross border neighbours I decided to find out why. The short answer to this question will be posted in the following points.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO HIGHER CANADIAN RETAIL PRICES
  • taxes.
  • higher sales and larger markets in the U.S.
  • labour costs.
  • productivity gaps.
  • transportation costs, which in Canada include both gas taxes and a vast area to cover.

So there you have it my fellow Canadians, not only are we paying for the product but, several other important factors that make it a possibility for that particular product to be available in Canada.Lets not forget that the store also needs to make a profit, pay their employees, and pay the basic costs of keeping the store running.

For those Canadians living in places that border the USA would this make you more inclined to shop there?
